Lego Space: Spyrius Droid

Inspired by these Spyrius droids from Lego Space. They were some of my most favorite lego figures, I have always liked the intriguing combination of transparent helmet and robot head somehow.

My last update on this blog is already a while ago, mostly because I've been busy setting up another portfolio website geared more towards Industrial Design related work and because I've started my graduation thesis project at Guerrilla Games.

In the meantime I decided to use this blog a little more like a sketchbook, so I'm aiming to upload more sketches and doodles on here on a regular basis.

Brutus Jr. - Badass Gun Challenge

My entry for the Bad-ass Gun Challenge at the ArtOrder blog. The challenge was to design a bad-ass beefy handgun that looked operational and had a skull incorporated in the design.

I decided to go for a slightly Hellboy-ish kind of design by taking a small gun and putting a large caliber round in it. I suspect this thing would jam at the second or third round already if it works at all (and would have a hell of a kickback when fired..).

Saab 9-5 Project - Automotive Design Course

This project has had me occupied for the past half a year or so. Done for the Automotive Design course at my faculty, we had to create a concept design for the year 2014 from an existing car. I chose Saab as I found it was in intriguing brand. Had a lot of fun with this project, and learned tons at the same time.

The course was roughly devided in three parts: the first was a deconstruction of the current car and brand, along with developing a vision and mission for the future, ending in a character definition with a few words. Sounds easier than it is, as it took up most of the first half of the project.

The second part was to develop a 2024 version. The reason for this is that for the 2014 concept, instead of conservatively building upon what already exists only a bit better, it can be inspired by a much more bold vision but toned down. The end result should be an innovative but feasible car.

The last step, the whole lower right corner basically, is the final concept for 2014. It should combine all of the results of the previous steps into a final concept.

Some automotive sketches, illustrations and studies. The first one was done at the AutoRai here in the Netherlands, a car show where we were drawing at with a bunch of people for the C'mm'n project.

Second and third are from the Automotive Sketching course at my faculty. The second one are a couple of studies from the Carver, a combination of motorcycle and car. The bike is derived from a Ducatti monster bike underlayer, we had to make our own interpretation of it. I added some bits and a background in Photoshop afterwards.

Last one is a Hotrod drawing I did a while ago, but never got around to scanning it in. Done in traditional media with markers, pen, pencil and pastels on cheap grey paper.

Entry for Panels of the Week nr. 12: The Other Side. Nathan Long provided us with a story and script for this short comic, but we were allowed to deviate from it a bit. Finished this within a week, was good practice. I used to draw a lot of comics when I was a kid, so this was fun.

Art Crusade Duels

Old piece done for the Art Crusade at Conceptart.org. The overall idea was to do monthly battles on a large scale (bunch of artist againts another bunch of artists all interpreting the same topic for their side). There were also small 48 hour duels going on between two artists, also to a set topic.

The topic for this one was 'player 2 (defender) : you have a realisation - your aura changes, you realise the way of the world, you are enlightened on the battlefield and no harm can possibly befall you.' The character in the foreground is the opponents character from his previous round.

Environments

Some environments I forgot to put up. They're in chronological order, the first one is from several years ago, the last one is more recent. I need more practice with those though, environments are definately not my strongest point.

First one was a personal project for fun, the other two are for the Environment of the Week activity. Nr.2 had as topic 'Sculpture Garden on the Island of the Surreal', which is why I pushed the colours a bit far. Last one had as topic 'Two Ancient Markers' with the subtext 'Jutting out from the moors marking the path, they hint to what lies beyond'.

Baba Yaga

Entries for a combined Industrial Design- and Character Design of the Week challenge. The topic was an old (Russian) legend of the witch Baba Yaga, flying through the skies on her mortar with a pestle for steering and living in a hut on chickenlegs.

Both are done within a week while I was already busy with other things, so I didn't get around to put some colour on them.

Automotive Sketches

Several sketches I did in the Automotive Design class of this morning. All 20-30 minute sketches from photo reference, focussing on getting the character of the car rather than on perspective and rendering. Marker on A3 paper.

From top to bottom: Volkswagen Beetle from 1987, two Tatra T87's (the top one is a later version, note the more elegant lines) and a Citroën DS from 1955.

Entry for IDW number 73: The Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain. The topic allowed for some freedom in choosing which treasure to portray, so this is actually one of the four Hallows of Ireland. It was a great opportunity to explore the British and Irish mythology, as I knew only a little about it before starting to work on this.

Garble Swan

The Garble Swan can be found in the marshes and swamps of the second moon of the Arghlgl system. As it has got rid of its direct competitors in the food chain with its hideous appearance and smell, as well as having scared any carnivor that hunted it -the famous restaurant critic Le Gaston once descibed its meat as a combination of blubber and string, after which it disappeared off the menu in the entire galaxy- the species is now tumbling down the Darwin ladder of evolution out of sheer boredom. The sound it produces, originating from air canals surrounding the cavity in its chest (the wings fell off from uselessness), sounds rather retarded and weak. Mating calls are often only answered out of pity by the other sex. The species seems ready to die out pretty quickly.

Done for Creature of the Week number 113: Sound Creature. The idea was to create a creature inspired by a fragment of sound.
